COURSE

HAZARDOUS WASTE OPERATIONS & EMERGENCY RESPONSE (HAZWOPER) – 40 HOURS / 5 DAYS

This course trains students to work safely and efficiently on hazardous waste remediation projects, meeting OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120 requirements. While asbestos and lead training have both federal and state regulations, hazardous waste training is regulated only at the federal level.

  • Recognizing hazards
  • Understanding health effects
  • Using personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Decontamination processes
  • Remediation technologies
  • Site safety and health plans
  • Handling and sampling materials
  • Confined space safety
  • Worker legal rights

Hands-on Training Includes:

  • Overpacking a 55-gallon drum using the V, shim, or upside-down method
  • Sampling liquids in a drum using a glass thief and a composite liquid waste sampler (COLIWASA)
  • Collecting soil samples
  • Setting up a staging area for barrels
  • Inspecting and donning full-faced air-purifying respirators (FFAPR)
  • Inspecting and donning a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)
  • Completing Levels B and C dressing and obstacle courses
  • Completing Level A dressing and obstacle courses
  • Participating in decontamination field exercises

After passing a 25-question exam (80% or better), you’ll receive a Northwest Laborers-Employers Training Trust Certification Card. If you take the course at the Kingston training facility, you get the card immediately after passing the exam. For other training sites, the card will be mailed to your home within a few days. Certifications are valid for one year.

COURSE

HAZARDOUS WASTE RECERTIFICATION (WORKER) – 8 HOURS / 1 DAY

Hazardous waste workers and supervisors need to complete an 8-hour HAZWOPER refresher course within 12 months of their last training. This class updates workers and supervisors on current regulations for hazardous waste remediation.

The refresher course is available online. You’ll need to contact your Local to schedule it. After passing the 25-question exam (80% or better), your certification card will be mailed to your home.

Note: NWLETT does not offer the OSHA 8-hour HAZWOPER Supervisor (Initial) training. Many OSHA-authorized organizations across the U.S. provide this training.
